Power Juice Recipes For More Energy

!±8± Power Juice Recipes For More Energy

Forget those expensive power drinks full of sugar and caffeine and chemicals! The juice of certain fresh fruits and vegetables can wake you up in the morning and get you thru that mid-afternoon slump better than anything else. And best of all it's healthy for you!

Here are the top ten nutrients which are key to boosting energy, and the particular fruits and vegetables that contain the highest concentration of these nutrients. At the end I list some of my favorite power juice recipes using the tastiest combinations of these special foods.

The nutrients most involved in energy production are several B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B7, B9, and B12) plus C, E, and iron.

B12 - many nutritionists will say that the only significant natural source of B12 is found in meat. This is not entirely true since B12 is also abundant in spirulina, a fresh-water blue-green algae. Spirulina is a super food high in protein and many of the other energy-boosting B vitamins as well. I add this to many of my power juice recipes.

Folic Acid (B9) - The highest concentration of folic acid is found in vegetable greens, particularly spinach and collard), broccoli, beets, oranges, strawberries, and papaya. A lack of this nutrient causes fatigue and sleep problems. This vitamin is destroyed when cooked so the raw or juiced form of these fruits and veggies is particularly beneficial.

Biotin (B7) - is most concentrated in swiss chard, carrots, cucumber, strawberries, and raspberries. Another great source of B7 is nuts, especially peanuts, filberts, almonds, and peanut butter. A half of cup of peanuts provides more than twice the daily requirement of biotin.

Pantothenic Acid (B5) - not only produces energy, but it helps the body manage stress. The fruits and veggies highest in this nutrient are avocado, grapefruit, watermelon, and broccoli. Try to add spirulina and bran (rice or wheat) as these are particularly high in B5.

Niacin (B3) - fruits and vegetables highest in Niacin are strawberries, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Niacin is not only energizing, but it also helps keep the nervous system and digestive system running smoothly.

Riboflavin (B2) - is essential for blood cell and energy production and a healthy nervous system. Broccoli, chard, collard greens, and Romaine lettuce are the best vegetable sources of this vitamin.

Thiamin (B1) - is a major energy producer. It's found most abundantly in beans, peas, corn, avocado, and veggie greens.

Vitamin C - boosts the immune system and provides energy, with the added benefit of assisting in the absorption of another key ingredient in energy production - iron. These fruits and vegetables are most abundant in vitamin C: strawberries, kiwi, orange, papaya, grapefruit, broccoli, bell pepper, kale, and Brussels sprouts.

Vitamin E - is also a potent energy booster and antioxidant. The foods that are highest in vitamin E are spinach, Swiss chard, mango, papaya, and blueberries.

Iron - the last of our top ten energy producing nutrients is not found in high concentrations in any fruit or vegetable. However, these fruits and vegetables will enhance the body's ability to absorb iron: cantaloupe, broccoli, orange, Brussels sprouts, grapefruit, and green and red peppers.

Have a taste of my favorite power juice recipes that will fill you with energy.

What is a Green Juice and Why Should You Be Drinking One Everyday?

!±8± What is a Green Juice and Why Should You Be Drinking One Everyday?

You've probably heard of the term green juice but might not really know what it is. In this article I will explain to you what a green juice is and the benefits of drinking a green juice everyday.

What is a Green Juice?

A green juice is usually a non sweet juice (it usually does not contain much fruit, if any) that is usually composed of:

Cucumber Celery

and your choice of leafy greens such as:

Spinach Chard Kale Collards Parsley Cilantro Broccoli Cauliflower

Sprouts... (etc.)

Some extras to add to the juice if desired:

Lemon Lime Fennel Jicama Zucchini

and pretty much any non starchy vegetable. For extra sweetness it is permissible to add small quantities of:

apples carrots beets

or pretty much any starchy vegetable. Here is a great juice recipe that includes some apples for sweetness but you can take them out if you want.

Apple Lime Spinach Juice

5 ribs celery 1 large English cucumber 1/2 lime 1 bunch spinach (wash thoroughly) 2 apples (optional)

Put all the ingredients through a single auger juicer or a juicer that is good at choosing greens. If you don't have a juicer you could chop the cucumber, apple, and celery and place it in a blender (cucumber first) with the spinach, peeled lime, and a cup of water. Blend on high for about thirty seconds and then pour and squeeze the mixture through a sprout bag, strainer, or cheese cloth over a big bowl.

It is best to drink the juice first thing in the morning, an hour or so, before you eat your regular breakfast. Think of it like a living vitamin supplement instead of a meal replacement. By juicing your greens you are removing the pulp which makes all the nutrients in the leafy greens easy to digest and absorb.

Why is it important to drink a green juice?

It is important because it is one of the easiest ways to absorb the vitamins and minerals from leafy greens.

Leafy greens have an abundance of nutrients including:

* Trace minerals: iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium and vitamins, including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins
* Good Source of Vegetable Protein
* Alkalizing abilities
* Enzymes, Chlorophyll, and a host of Antioxidants including Beta-Carotene, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage.
* Dark leafy greens even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats.

Green juices also taste surprisingly good and refreshing. Making one every morning can be an event for the whole family. For extra nutrition an ounce of aloe vera juice can be added to the juice. Aloe vera juice is good for your joints and a healthy digestive system.

Also, 1 ounce of wheatgrass juice can be added to the juice recipe. Wheatgrass is the grass of the wheat berry and can be juiced to make a chlorophyll rich juice that contains as many nutrients as two pounds of vegetables.

I hope that this article clarified what is a green juice and I hope it encouraged you try try and make one at home. For more in depth information about green juices, green soups, and green smoothies I encourage you to check out the resources below.

How to Choose a Juicer

!±8± How to Choose a Juicer

When choosing a centrifuge for the first time, many people among the different types of juicers that are available today are confused. There are centrifugal juicers, single gear juicer, twin gear juicer, juicer and citrus juicer manual. So what's the difference between all types? And how do you know what you should get? Well, read on, and everything is revealed.

Centrifugal juicer

This juicer is that you have in your shop and I sawthey are by far the most popular juicers. They are relatively easy to use and most models are fairly cheap. They working by using a cutting blade to cut the produce and then spin it at great speed so that the juice is released. The drawback with these types of juice is that because they operate at high speed, heat is produced and air is drawn into the chamber, resulting in some of the nutrients in the juice being killed. For most people this isn't really a big deal, but for people with health challenges or those looking to get the healthiest juice, these are not the best juicers to get.

Some popular brands you may have heard of are Juiceman, Breville, Waring and L'Equip.

Single-Auger Juicers

These are slow speed juicers, meaning less heat and air, hence more nutrients. Unlike the centrifugal juicers, they are also able to juice leafy greens and wheatgrass, which are among some of the most nutritious juices. Many also have the ability to make nut butters, baby food, pasta, frozen desserts, dips, sauces, etc. These juicers are also easier to clean that the centrifugal juicers and are pretty easy to assemble and disassemble. Most are in the 0-0 price range, so are very good value for money, considering that they produce such high quality juice and have multiple functions.

Examples of good single-auger juicers are the Oscar, Omega 8004/8006 and Samson.

Twin-Gear Juicers

These are the top of the range brands with price tags to match. Usually selling for 0-00, they produce the juice with the most nutrients. People with serious health issues are usually advised to buy these juicers, but for most people we don't think they are necessary. Like their single augur counterparts, they also juicer at low speed. The difference though is that they have twin stainless steel gears, so are able to rupture the fruit and vegetable cells more easily. This is what releases the extra nutrients. They are a little more fiddly to put together and clean, but if it's top quality juice that you're after, then this is the machine for you.

Popular brands include the Kempo, Hippocrates, Angel and Green Star Juicers.

Citrus Juicers

As the name suggests, these are dedicated juicers for all things citrus - lemon, grapefruit, and oranges. When making orange juice with a citrus juicer, there is no need to peel the oranges first, so this is a big plus point for most people. If you mostly juice citrus, then this is a must-have juicer.

Popular brands include Remida and Citri-Star.

Manual Juicer

All the above are electric juicers and that is what most people prefer. But manual juicers also have their place. Many like juicing the wheatgrass with a manual juicer, as they claim that the juice is of a higher quality. Other love to take a manual juicer on vacation with them, because the electric juicers aren't really portable. Manual juicers can be quite hard work though. But that is not a bad thing. The most popular brand on the market is the Z-Star Juicer.

We hope the above has given you some insight into the different types of juicer available.
